Sneakers, I wear them a lot, far more than you’d think. If you were to run into me on the street in Barcelona, probably on Diagonal or Rambla Catalunya, I’d most likely being wearing a flat, white shoe that you wouldn’t look twice at. Because, you see, strangely enough I prefer off brand, simple sneaker styles in the 25 euro range. These ones are from Bershka and I bought 3 pairs on sale because they are easy, basic and totally nondescript. I wear them so often that my boyfriend asked me if they were my favourite sneakers and I guess they are, purely because they are so wonderfully boring. I’ve never sought a statement sneaker, quite the opposite, for me they are essentially shoe camouflage; a footwear option that easily blends into almost any outfit I put on. Now I like the Nikes and the Stan Smiths and all the others, but 100 euros or more seems frivolous to spend on a pair of shoes that will get scuffed before I can lace them up. And so I’ll always be the girl in cheap sneakers, always. But I’m okay with that, I like the bland kicks in a sea of crazy sneakers, like those yeezy ones that are just comically avant garde for me, I could never wear those with jeans and a preppy little blazer to go buy some flowers. They would simply look stupid on me. As I have matured a little, or perhaps as my style has evolved, I find myself drawn to the basics – the skinnies that fit perfectly, tailored blazers in all the solid, classic shades, shoes I can leave by my front door and slip on because they match with everything. I get very excited when I find a grey marl t shirt that drapes just right. I have 12 trench coats in varying shades of navy, black and camel, in different fits and lengths that go from cropped all the way down to my ankles. And while I might not be able to convince you of the beauty of the boring cheap sneaker, I will suggest this, seek out some classic basics – they will make getting dressed a lot easier. Tutus and dresses with a dozen straps are beautiful and lovely but I’d take the perfect tank top any day. Girls, I still dream of the perfect tank top and at times I find myself shaking my head in Zara or wherever else wondering when the day will come when I will find this fantasy. I’m sure you know the one; not too tight, not too loose with straps just the right width that make the shoulders look slim but athletically broad at the same time. If I find it, I’ll tell you and we can buy it in every colour. And if you find it? I hope you tell me too.
